Supperclub San Francisco was designed by Dutch design firm Concrete Architectural Associates and is a must see for anyone interested in restaurant, bar and or nightclub design. Simply by design standards Supperclub SF is a world class venue.
From the modest exterior one would hardly expect that a set of many San Francisco traditions is being mixed down.
Tapping into San Francisco’s passion for fine food, the Supperclub features a ground level open kitchen that transforms what would once be hidden into a performance. The chef and DJ are now taking very similar roles here.
Being uniquely placed in one of the most expressive regions of the world, Supperclub brings visual performance which I can only describe as a composed mosaic of merging styles and image.
The DJ booth is placed in the center of the room on ground level allowing intimacy and restoring the dancer DJ relationship to a mutual conspiracy of enjoyment. The importance of this cannot be understated. This creates a bond between the entertainer and the entertained. The blurring of the line between the two is in my eyes the true beauty of this establishment.
Supperclub features a superior high fidelity sound system capable of knocking your socks off with its forceful clarity of sound rather than bombarding you with sheer volume.
The venue is also equipped with state of the art led lighting system that can change the color of the main room in up to 65,000 hues.
Musical Entertainment here is consistently solid and the Musical Director Michael Anthony (of Late Night Sneaky) brings in a steady lineup of solid guests, recently including Grand Master Flash, Bebel Gilberto, New Order’s Peter Hook and a personal favorite of mine, the Lawn Chair Generals.
The staff is comprised of exceptional, unique individuals, with a keen sense of style and a genuine desire to assist their guest in having a great evening. The personalities, hard work, and consideration gives Supperclub a level of approachability and realness that keeps it from becoming too sexy for itself in down to earth San Francisco.
So what’s on the musical menu for the upcoming year?
“Look for more live music, more big name DJ’s, and more discoveries of lesser known stellar musicians. We also would like to continue with our occasional “Once in a Lifetime” series, in which international bossa nova sensation, Bebel Gilberto, wowed the crowd with an intimate 3 night special engagement last year” says Alex.
I have no doubt that the Supperclub team will continue to deliver superior nights out in the coming year. I personally appreciate the work they have done to answer the question “where do we go from here?”
After reading reflections of David Mancuso’s legendary “Loft” in New York, of which all modern nightclubs owe a huge conceptual debt, one can not help but wonder if Alex and Tad were consciously trying to bring us back to basics with the intimacy of Supperclub SF. Or maybe not, but what they have done is create something very special in a city that deserves it.
